Most wasps we deal with are paper wasps, either the Australian paper wasp or European wasp. Dealing with European wasps is a lot more dangerous due to the size of the nest, their location (often underground) and their very aggressive nature.

We follow a 5-step process for eliminating wasp nests:

Inspect the property to determine the location of all of the nests.

For nests inside the building (e.g., roof void) we will identify all entrance / exit points

Treat the wasp nest with either liquid insecticide spray or insecticide dust, depending on the location of the nest and the type of wasp

For accessible nests on / inside buildings, we will remove the nest once activity has ceased

We can carry out an optional, residual insecticide treatment to building surfaces to prevent wasps building nests for many months

Safety precautions

It is important that all people and pets and are removed from the treatment area whilst the treatment is being carried out and only re-enter once we have given the all clear.

Our pest technicians will wear the appropriate safety gear – for European wasps this will often mean bee net, full protective overalls and gloves.

What to expect from our wasp treatments?

The nest should be destroyed within minutes. But we will remain on site until activity has ceased and nest elimination confirmed.

If accessible, we will remove any wasp nests from the building.

Types of wasps

There are 3 main types of wasps in Victoria:

Australian paper wasps

There are a number of different species of Australian paper wasp, but the most common species is actually called the Australian paper wasp.

European wasp

This is an invasive pest and can build nests of up to 100,000 wasps. 80% of European wasp nests are actually underground.

Potter wasps and mud dauber wasps

These wasps build brood cells out of mud, in which they place a paralysed caterpillar or spider. They then lay a single egg on the prey. When the egg hatches the larva has fresh meat!

How to prevent a wasp problem

To reduce the changes of wasps building their nests on the outside of buildings, it is necessary to treat the surfaces with a long-lasting insecticide.

There is nothing that can be done to prevent wasps building their nests in the vegetation away from the building.

Make your home less attractive to wasps by removing potential food sources

European wasps will fly hundreds of metres from their nest, and they love both protein (for feeding their young) and sugar (for themselves).

Don’t leave food out unattended, especially soft drinks, meat and petfood.
